After graduating from East Carolina University Ms. Newsom went on to study at Campbell University: she obtained a Juris Doctorate with a concentration in Trial and Appellate Advocacy from The Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business. As a student at Campbell, she was named on the President’s List of honor students, advanced to the semi-final rounds of counseling competitions, and participated in the moot court program. Furthermore, she was awarded the Elgie Lee Mae Scholarship, the Miss Spivey’s Corner academic scholarship, and several academic scholarships from The Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. To prepare her for a career as a practicing attorney, Ms. Newsom began working at a law firm during high school and continued working with the firm throughout college and law school. Additionally, she served as a Congressional Intern for U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre in Washington, DC. Upon graduation from law school, Ms. Newsom worked as defense counsel with the Cumberland County Public Defender’s office; this job enabled her to utilize and cultivate her debate and trial skills. Since leaving that position Ms. Newsom has worked in private practice and expanded her work to include additional areas of the law: she continues to practice criminal defense in addition to other matters, which include but are not limited to, real estate, personal injury, bankruptcy, domestic, employment, and civil litigation issues. Furthermore, she is an active member of numerous legal associations: the American Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the North Carolina Bar Association, the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, the Legal Support Staff of North Carolina, the Cumberland County Bar Association, the Cumberland County Young Lawyer’s Division, the Legal Support Staff of Cumberland County, and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. |
